The 2019 Oban Sportive , a partnership between Oban Rotary and North Argyll Cycling Club (NACC) held its 7th annual event on Sunday 12th May with the start and finishing positions taking place at The Oban Distillery who support the event along with Bid4Oban and Aggregate Industries.

Once again the cyclists were blessed with good weather which ensured that both the long (87 miles) and the short (56 miles) courses, around Loch Awe and Loch Avich, certainly in terms of scenery, were very much enjoyed by the participants which numbered in excess of 190. The Sportive is not a race but a time trial where cyclists endeavour to set a time for themselves or endeavour to beat a previous time. The cyclists comprised a large number from NACC alongside many entries from other clubs around Scotland which included Stephen Dent who is a professional cyclist. Good times were recorded by Oban men Gavin Blainey and Matty Robertson. The event was also supported by well known cyclist and wildlife enthusiast, Markus Stitz who gave a talk the previous evening on his adventures around the world.
It is readily agreed that the Oban Sportive now forms an integral part of the town's activities. Baking etc was, as usual, supplied by Oban Inner Wheel and sustenance was also provided at the end of the event by Julie's cafe.
Our picture shows the finishing line with Rotary Sportive Convener Lachie Beaton in the background wearing the high vis vest. The cyclists were very much appreciative of the marshalling and other support services provided by Oban Rotary who had in excess of 30 members "on duty".
