Local Pupils win Rotary GB&I National prizes
A team of 3 Oban High School students belonging to the school’s Eco Club, and an individual pupil of Salen Primary School on Mull, have each been awarded third prize at Rotary National level for their entries in the Rotary Young Environmentalist Competition 2023/24. The theme of that competition was ‘Waste Minimisation’ and both entries had novel approaches within that theme, and presented their findings well in a digital format.

Arran Tangney was the winner from Salen Primary School who won for his entry in the Junior age group Individual entry category.
Trophies, certificates and money vouchers made their efforts very worth while.Dot Dahl, Youth Services Convenor of Oban Rotary Club said “ Oban Rotary Club were delighted to have all the local entries to this competition, which showed that our young people are very concerned about their environment, and are keen to look for positive ways to cut waste.”
A new Rotary year has just started and the Young Environmentalist Competition 2024/25 is being run at local and District level with the theme “Wonderful Water". Local schools and youth groups have been informed of the opportunity for their young people to be involved. That doesn’t stop individual young people, or groups of friends, forming a team of up to 4 and taking part independently. This is such a good opportunity to explore what is so wonderful about water, much of which we take for granted here in Scotland. There are, though, issues relating to fresh and sea water quality, fishing, fish farming, ’sea wilding’, flooding etc., which have their pluses and minuses. We hope as many of our young people will participate in this competition. Entries are to be in a digital form.
